How much do your clothes cost?

>> 3.03.2010

I was excited to read that so many people were enjoying my "How Much?" series (see the rest here) because I just can't get enough! Seeing as it's closet week around here (have you entered the giveaway or looked at my closet yet?) let's do a little breakdown of my everyday clothes:

This is the outfit that I wore all day yesterday. By the time I took this picture, it was warm enough not to wear a coat or jacket. My coat would have added about $60 (on sale at Gap). Sorry about the dog... they just can't seem to stay out of the shots!

I'm really big on layering my clothes. I probably wear this short sleve sweater thing once a week. I try to add different belts and tops to mix things up.

Belt: $6 Gap
Sweater: $12 Anthopologie (Yes, they do have great sales sometimes... you just have to shop there a lot to find them!)
Top: $8 Gap (I always find great 40% off deals at the Gap the week of Christmas)

I'm pretty lucky in that I wear the shoe size that most stores use on display. I can usually get amazing discounts by snagging the last pair available.

Boots: $40 Aldo
Socks: $2 Gap
Jeans: $9 Forever 21 (These were the first pair of jeans that bought there. I was worried about the quality, but I've had them for over a year and they've held together perfectly.)

I know, you were probably waiting for a picture of this little guy... after plenty of craziness, he had to be held.

Necklace: $0 (gift)

Total: $77 ($137 with coat)
I consider myself lucky that I can wear such a casual outfit to work. I suppose that's part of the perks of working with computers!

I have to share my other daily outfit... it's actually the more expensive one!

Shoes: $90 Brooks/ local store (...and that was after a discount! I'd rather pay for good shoes than physical therapy for an injury)
Socks: $0 part of race packet
Pants: $35  Addias/ local store (I bought these last year at a winter clearance for 50% off)
Top: $0 gift
Jacket: $25 Nike/ REI (this was also a winter clearance find)

Total: $150 (and two pieces were free!)

Because you might be wondering, THIS is why Hugo had to be held...
He learned to climb the fence. I guess there's another project to add to the list!

I also went ahead and broke down my average max cost for each type of clothing in my closet. Some things are from clearance sales, some from thrift stores (most of the jeans), and some were full price (yeah, right!).

So, how much do your clothes cost? What's the price of your outfit right now?

I hear ya on the more expensive running outfit! I splurged on some $50 under armor running tights for these cold SLC winters (and don't regret it), $80 Mizuno shoes, $8 sports bra from Old Navy, $6 socks, and most of my running tops are about $10 (Ross is the best!). Running outfit total is around $154 and $164 depending on how cold it is.

My outfit today is
$10 shoes
$10 scarf
$7 shirt
$6 pants (thrift store)
free watch
$1 hair clip
plus unmentionables (snicker) about $30
Total: $74 not bad!

Babs March 3, 2010 at 12:08 PM

let see...

Boots: $45 - Kohls
Jeans: $20 - Chico's on sale
Blouse: $8 - Target sale
Cardigan: free from friend's giveaway
jewelry: free from mother's jewelry box (old antique set)

not too bad I guess- $73 total? haha, well ok yeah that's expensive.

Kasey, you're right on point about buying good quality shoes though when it comes to running. I have a good friend who was training for the marathon last fall in some bargain-basement sneakers, and she ended up with all kinds of problems.

everything I am wearing is at least 3 years old, so I don't think they owe me anything!

I pay a lot of money for staple peices in my wardrobe- but I usually get at least 5 years worth out of them. I may pay $60 for a pair of pants, but after 5 years, it's only a dollar a month. That's how I look at it.

$7 yoga pants (half of a package from Sam's)
$4 clearance tank from Target
$20 boyfriend carigan from target that mut be 4 years old
$60 (?) New Ballance sneakers that I think i have had since high school so with depreciation I think that makes them free

so a whopping $91 dollars!

Unless I have to count my jackets, scarves, etc that are required to brave the Chicago cold!

Your closet is a well organized inspiration!

I have to dress professionally. Plus I need to order Tall size shirts and pants-which can be difficult to find with with major discounts (catalog shopping for me). Oh, no. I just realized that I have my splurge boots on today too! Oh well, they are such high quality books, I'm still glad I bought them.

(JC Penney) Blouse: $21.00
(JC Penney) Slacks: $20.00
(Target)Socks: $1.00
(Target) Undergarments: $25.00
(Zappos) Boots: $115.00
Jewelry-$0.00 (gifts)

Total: $182.00

I also have on a belt that is at least 7 years old. I have no clue what I paid for it.

Kathryn March 3, 2010 at 1:15 PM

What I am wearing right now cost under $5 - thrift store mock turtle neck was 50 cents, knit pants were given to me and my teen sons too small socks, Walmart 88 cent undies and an on sale sports bra that was $2.50.

That doesn't mean I haven't spent a small fortune on clothes over the years though.

I think what you spend will depend much on where you work, what your daily activities are, and where you live along with your personal preferences.

When I worked at bank I spent more on dry cleaning an nylons in a week than I spent on any outfit I work when I worked at a call center.

alanna rose March 3, 2010 at 2:26 PM

I'm not listing the prices - I'd be put to shame by your awesomely thrifty readers! I'm in maternity clothes right now, and they just never seem to go on sale!

Even though I am a stay at home mom, and wear very casual clothes most days - I spend a small fortune on my bras. By far the most expensive items in my closet, but being comfortable all day long and having a flattering silhouette is worth it to me (plus I absolutely baby my bras, so that I can wear them for as long as possible).

Katie March 3, 2010 at 3:28 PM

i need new running shoes so badly and am having a hard time with the price... i agree that running/workout clothes are so expensive!

lets see if i can remember my outfit today though:

2 tank tops, layered: $5 and $12, both from old navy
cardigan: gift (from ny and co, so was probably less than $30)
pants: i think $25 on sale, from gap
shoes: they were under $20, from sale rack at macys

so total: about $92

i like layers so that helps with the budget - a lot of my summer clothes i still wear in the winter, just add a cardigan or sweater.

Kristi W @ Life at the Chateau Whitman March 3, 2010 at 8:07 PM

Well today to work I wore some great black dress pants that I got at Aeropostale (of all places) on clearance for $10. I wore a colored VS tank, bought for $8 on sale. And then a Target cardigan for $15. Some cheap black socks and some Clarks I got for $50 with a gift card (so free to me). Most of my clothes are pretty inexpensive. :)

$0 gifted vintage leather jacket
$11 scarf from Target
$12 Mossimo sweater
$12 t-shirt from Walmart
$8 tank top from Walmart

Are those the Brooks Addiction?

I am going back to that shoe - I have hopped around different shoes but that was the first good shoe I got in 2002 and so far, it's worked the best. In a couple weeks I am upgrading! (260 miles on my current pair and they don't feel like they're going to stretch much farther than 300).

Kasey at Thrifty Little Blog March 5, 2010 at 3:19 PM

@chacha~ They're actually Defyance. I usually buy Glycerin (both neutral shoes), but I don't think I'm going back... these are just so much lighter! I like to try different styles once in a while just to see what works best (that's how I switched from Mizuno to Brooks in the first place).

chacha March 5, 2010 at 4:01 PM

Ah, you are lucky - you have normal arches!

Brooks are good - not sure why I have been messing around with New Balance lately - maybe b/c the Brooks models I need are almost never on sale!

I love this post! I am all about finding good deals and spreading the word! And your dogs are just too cute!!!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

Amanda @ Little House on the Corner March 10, 2010 at 9:40 PM

Well, right now I am in my pajamas, but I would say that the outfit I wore to work today cost me about $70 (that's including $30 shoes, which I bought full-price at Kohl's). Other than that, I rarely buy anything at full-price. I'm a total bargain hunter. Most of my clothes lately have been from the clearance racks at Target!

spyder August 6, 2010 at 7:59 AM

My clothes is not that expensive...For me price doesn't matter as long as you are comfortable of what you are wearing it is ok...also you have a proper dress for the occasion that is what matter most...
