I must know...

Have you finished your taxes yet?

Have I? Nope. I've been waiting on a few documents... and maybe procrastinating a bit.

So, are you a:
 "I finished months ago."
"It's not even April yet!
"I have my CPA/BFF/husband/mother do them for me."
type of person?

Kate March 26, 2010 at 8:19 AM

I still haven't done ours. I should have though because I know we'll get money back ... I have no excuses, I've just been lazy about it ;)

miniannalee March 26, 2010 at 8:28 AM

I'm going to do mine this weekend. I've been putting it off for no reason. I know I'll get money back but I just didn't feel like dealing with them yet. I normally do them the first week in February. I guess I'm just being lazy too.

Audreya March 26, 2010 at 8:31 AM

We tend to be on the early side of things. Last year, we waited until April and David complained the rest of the year that we were NOT waiting that long again. So, we rushed around this year to get then done... wouldn't want our $36 refund to be late. :-) On the plus side, we didn't have to pay in and apparently we are paying the ideal amount in all year. (Or something like that to make me feel less bummed about not getting a big check!)

Ashley Mutschler March 26, 2010 at 8:32 AM

I do ours the second we get our W-2s. I cannot wait for that money back!

Danielle and Clint March 26, 2010 at 9:00 AM

As soon as I got everything, I headed over to my friends, who is an accountant and she did them for me. We can always use the refund!

Hannah March 26, 2010 at 9:08 AM

I am with Ashley and Danielle, as soon as I had my w-2s, I was on Turbotax getting the submitted. I love having that refund check in my grubby little hands.

Kasey at Thrifty Little Blog March 26, 2010 at 9:21 AM

I was really eager to get my refund this year, but I had to wait an extra few weeks for one document... by that time the excitment wore off. It will be interesting to see what my refund number looks like since I bought a house last year!

craftosaurus March 26, 2010 at 9:27 AM

Done a few weeks ago. If I'd owed anything, though, I'd definitely have waited until the almost-last minute. Ah, the time value of money...

Babs March 26, 2010 at 10:10 AM

I'm with you Kasey--we also bought a house so we had to wait for the proper mortgage statement to file the taxes. But man when we did... it's a nice refund :)

change is a good thing March 26, 2010 at 10:11 AM

We did ours early in February. We've gotten the California refund back, but the federal is taking longer because of the $8,000 tax credit. Hope it arrives soon, we could definitely use it right about now.

Jamie Lee March 26, 2010 at 10:14 AM

I owed money because of a bunch of freelance that I did last year. I let my dad and his Turbo Tax dig for deductibles for me and sent things off on Monday. I completely understand the concept of waiting until the last minute if you owe things so that you can collect the interest, but when comparing the interest I would've earned and the peace of mind that I have in knowing that I won't accidentally forget, I felt like the peace of mind definitely won out.

LizzieBeth March 26, 2010 at 10:18 AM

I did mine in February, and already spent the money on wedding stuff.

Hailey March 26, 2010 at 10:23 AM

I did ours BEFORE we even got our W-2s...ok well not techinally. I used Turbo tax to enter all the guestimated info and then the minute I got all the required documents I updated the forms and submitted them. Have already spent the money too...on a new shed!

The Brick Cottage March 26, 2010 at 10:31 AM

It's a no for me. I'm the one who does them in our house and I've been procrastinating. I think because I think this year it's going to be more complicated but I'm sure that's all in my head since I haven't even tried yet! It's weird for me to wait so long, too. In the past, I'd do them the day my w2's arrived. But back then I'd always use my refund for a vacation so maybe that's why I've been so slow about it. Now I use it for practical stuff and it's not nearly as fun!

Kristi W @ Life at the Chateau Whitman March 26, 2010 at 10:37 AM

I usually do them immediately in early February, but I'm behind this year.

rskmom March 26, 2010 at 10:45 AM

I do mine with Turbo Tax and filed both in February. I got my federal back in a short time (e-filed for free). My state refund is being mailed in early April, though it was mailed at the same time. This is because I live in NY and they are holding refunds due to our current budget crisis. :(

Katie March 26, 2010 at 10:47 AM

I'm very lucky to have my dad do my taxes! :)

Lydia March 26, 2010 at 11:31 AM

I mailed mine at end of January and got the refund a couple weeks ago - almost double what I expected because I didn't realize I was eligible for a certain tax credit - wasn't that nice of the IRS to catch that for me??

It was a wake up call that I should be using something other than doing them by hand in case they aren't always so giving. . .

Meg March 26, 2010 at 11:35 AM

I'm like you! We bought a house this year, which is so exciting, but Lee sold a couple of stocks and we're waiting to get information back about that. You'd think we'd have been done the second we got our forms, but we're not done yet! Hopefuly it won't take, like, a year to get that 8k!

Mrs. Chic March 26, 2010 at 11:48 AM

We got are large refund last year, so we couldn't wait to file - this year were taking our tile, I'm hopeing to wrap up our taxes this weekend

Hillary @ The Sweet Maple Life March 26, 2010 at 12:49 PM

Finished months ago!!
I was seriously stalking the mailman for our W2s lol

Normally I procrastinate really bad- but when it comes to getting your first tax return after owning a home... I was a bit motivated for the proceeds to be deposited in my account :)lol

Carly March 26, 2010 at 3:15 PM

I am a...I finished months ago/my hubby does it!

My husband is very much on top of finances and we NEEDED that tax return money as our TV had just gone out..can't miss my DVR'd shows ;)

Lauren March 26, 2010 at 4:15 PM

My Dad the CPA does them for me! It's the best benefit of having accountants in your family. Chris' Dad and brother in law are accountants too.. so we may never have to do our own taxes! :)

alanna rose March 26, 2010 at 8:14 PM

We file jointly and my husband does them - he finished them as soon as the last documents came in.

If he didn't we'd procrastinate forever (I've been known to file extensions in April and Oct!).

Kathryn March 28, 2010 at 2:37 AM

I usually schedule to have my accountant do them in February, but he retired 2 years ago and I was not thrilled with his replacement and feel she over charged - if anything my taxes were easier last year as no HSA was involved, yet I was charged over $35 more than any year previously.

I have a simple return and decided to do my own this year. I finished it on the free version of TaxAct but want to check on other free software to double check and see if my refund is accurate and will do so within the next week.

Jenny @ Anything Pretty March 28, 2010 at 9:14 PM

Ours are pretty much done...but I have been putting off actually filing them because I do not want to part with our money. In the past we had a CPA do it for us. But this year it is just us and TurboTax. Good luck with yours!

hiphousegirl March 29, 2010 at 10:06 AM

After some (gentle?) nudging from the bf, I finally took mine down to a place called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax something...) where volunteers do them for free! His mom happens to volunteer there, so it wasn't too tortuous to sit there with her while she plugged everything into the software. Thanks to my energy credit for my new furnace, among other things, I'm quite pleased with the size of my refund!

Erin @ SYL: Slipcover Your Life March 29, 2010 at 3:31 PM

I finish mine the minute I received my W-4s! I hate having things hanging over my head, so I just get them done and then never need to think about them!
